Microbial indicators (such as Staphylococcus aureus suspension) are pumped to the spray port of the aerosol generator by a peristaltic pump, and the air source is also delivered to the spray port of the aerosol generator, so that the microbial suspension is atomized in the aerosol generator to produce bacterial aerosols. Bacteria are sampled through a biological sampler followed by culture. Finally, the filtration efficiency of the mask is calculated according to the bacterial aerosol concentration before and after the mask filtration.

The suspension meets the high-pressure gas at the spray port of the aerosol chamber to produce an aerosol. By comparing the concentration of bacterial aerosols before and after filtration, it was used to detect whether the bacterial filtration efficiency of the mask met the relevant standards.
